i've been suckling for far too long
i've been slowly letting the fires die down
i've been smashed and broken, i must pick myself together
if i have the will--if i can find it still
oh, i'll make the same mistake and make it three times more
i don't ask for permission, most only for forgiveness
and i would make amends, but i am such a chore
and in my defense i've been shattered on the floor
but i am just a man, whom do i answer for?
and you'll catch me playing with myself in the corner
i am lost now, i have been mourning my own self
just put me in the ground
cuz oh, i've been dead--i've been dead awhile now
oh, i'll make the same mistake and make it three times more
i don't ask for permission, most only for forgiveness
and i would make amends, but i am such a chore
and in my defense i've been shattered on the floor
but i am just a man, whom do i answer for?
my face has grown old, my face has grown cold
i'm sick to the stomach and i made it so
my mind has grown old, my body's necrosed
my muscles are atrophied and i made it so
my heart has grown cold, my heart has old
i am a monster and i made it so

It's unfortunate that Marietta disbanded, but they couldn't have ended on a better note. As it Were is a reflection into a lot of youths' struggle with both aging and losing friends to time, and that it's okay to feel those things, even if for a little while. Halfrican Jones
